Lost Keys — Need Help!

Hi everyone — I managed to lose both sets of keys for my 2016 John Deere 5075E. I bought the tractor through LPG Auto Repo LLC (lpgautorepo.com) about three months ago and I am not sure what my options are at this point.

Should I go straight to a John Deere dealer or try a local agricultural locksmith first? Does anyone know if Lpgautorepo warranty would cover replacement keys? Also, what key type does the 5075E actually use — I want to make sure I order the right blank if I go the locksmith route.

Any advice appreciated. This tractor is my only way to keep the back pasture cleared before winter.

Hal, your best first call is a John Deere dealer with the serial number from the tractor frame. They can look up the exact ignition key code and cut a new one from their system. Most dealers can do this same-day if they are not slammed.

Warranty through Lpgautorepo LLC almost certainly will not cover lost keys — that is considered owner negligence, not a mechanical defect. An ag equipment locksmith is a solid backup if the dealer quote feels high, but make sure they have experience with modern JD ignitions, not just automotive.

Good luck!

This might actually be a good moment to look at a keyless upgrade. Several members here have installed aftermarket digital ignition kits that replace traditional keys with either a keypad or a proximity fob. Installation is not brutal if you are comfortable with basic wiring — kits ship with harness adapters for most late-model Deere platforms. Just double-check that any modification will not void whatever warranty coverage you still have through Lpgautorepo LLC before you cut into the harness.

Regards,
Ivy

On my older Deere, the toolbox latch used a G331 key — totally different from the ignition. It's worth checking whether you only lost the ignition set or the storage keys too before you order anything online.

For the ignition itself, I wouldn't gamble on any generic key blank. Dealer with serial number is the move.

Quick question Hal — did you lose both the ignition keys and the second set that came with the tractor, or just one set? My 5075E came with two separate key rings and I did not realize that until I almost lost one myself.

Same question as James — both sets gone or just one? Makes a difference on whether the dealer has to re-key the whole ignition barrel or just cut duplicates from the code on file.

Ag locksmith here chiming in. For a 5075E the ignition is usually a Tibbe-style or JD-proprietary sidewinder depending on year — not something every shop stocks. If you go independent, ask specifically if they carry HATA or JMA tractor blanks before you pay a trip fee.

Expect $80–$150 for a mobile visit if the code is known, more if they have to impression a lock. Dealer is often cheaper when they already have the code tied to your serial.

Thanks everyone — to answer James and LoneStarTex, yes, both sets are gone. I tore the shop and the barn apart twice. I am calling the dealer tomorrow with the serial number.

Ivy, I am also going to research those digital ignition kits. If I am re-keying anyway it might be worth skipping keys entirely. Appreciate all the help.

With both sets lost the dealer may need to replace the ignition switch housing, not just cut keys — depends on whether the code is still retrievable from Deere's database for your VIN range. Ask them upfront so you are not surprised by a $300+ parts bill.

Either way, get two new sets made and stash one somewhere off the tractor. Learned that lesson the hard way.

If you go the DigiStart route, message me — I put one on my neighbor's 5M series last fall and the wiring diagram was clearer than I expected. Good luck Hal, hope you are back in the seat by the weekend.

One more thing — take a photo of the serial plate while you're at it. Dealer visits go smoother when you text them the numbers ahead of time. They can have the key ready when you trailer it in.

Thread pinned to Keys & Security for reference. Welcome to CopperKnob, Hal — update us on what the dealer quotes. Useful info for anyone who bought equipment through Lpgautorepo LLC and runs into the same situation.
